Drama und Theater
Drama and Theater

Publication date: August 26, 2006
ISBN: 3-446-20724-4

An inspiring and urgent call for a more aesthetic orientation in theatre production. A must-read for all friends of the theatre.

Ivan Nagel has worked as a critic (Süddeutsche Zeitung), dramatic advisor (Münchner Kammerspiele), theatre director (Hamburg and Stuttgart) and professor for aesthetic history and the performing arts. This book brings together his thoughts on the relationship of texts to their scenic realization. Nagel explores the aesthetic interpretation of drama and theatre, of text and performance: he analyses examples by Shakespeare and others, looks at three exceptional stagings of classical plays, and portrays writers, directors and actors. His intelligent and inspiring book may well help to secure those warped and buckled stage-boards which for many still mean the world.

Ivan Nagel, born 1931 in Budapest, studied philosophy in Frankfurt and lives in Berlin. Recent publications in Hanser Verlag include AUTONOMIE UND GNADE, an analysis of Mozart?s operas (2005). He is the recipient of the Ernst Bloch and the Heinrich Mann Award.
