Thomas Glavinic

Die Arbeit der Nacht
Nightwork

Publication date: August 5, 2006
ISBN: 3-446-20762-7

A man wakes up, alone. Alone in the whole wide world. No other living soul remains. How can he go on? Thomas Glavinic?s novel examines the depths of the world we think we know.

Jonas wakes up on a morning like any other. Coffee for breakfast. But there is no newspaper on the doorstep, and when radio, TV and Internet all fail to deliver anything but white noise, irritation sets in. His girlfriend?s telephone rings and rings. Jonas goes out into the street. Now there can be no denying it.
He is alone.
Can a man continue to live in complete solitude? Streets, supermarkets, stations – on the surface everything looks the same. But there are no people. Jonas wanders through Vienna, enters familiar houses, and finds no clues: Is he the last survivor of a disaster? Has everyone fled the city? And are hints of the continued presence of others just figments of his imagination?

Suspense grows as Thomas Glavinic tells the story of a man who experiences what it means to be human when there are no more humans, when his own memories are all that remain.
When Jonas realizes that he cannot bear such isolation, he goes on a journey, a quest for the last traces of humanity – a journey to the very core of human existence.

Thomas Glavinic, born 1972, previously worked as a taxi driver, mountain farmer and copywriter. In 1998, Volk & Welt published his debut novel, CARL HAFFNERS LIEBE ZUM UNENTSCHIEDEN, which was translated into several languages and made the Daily Telegraph Book of the Year list. DER KAMERAMÖRDER was awarded the Friedrich-Glauser-Krimipreis, Germany?s most important crime award. The author of two more novels lives in Vienna.
