Gergely Péterfy

Baggersee
Quarry Lake

Publication date: February 4, 2008
ISBN: 978-3-552-05430-1

The world?s complexity mirrored in a small lake that may not even exist: the depths of this magical setting created by Gergely Péterfy are altogether impossible to resist.
A forbidden zone, a paradoxical, artificial location? The lake, really no more than a flooded gravel pit, seems to attract people almost magically. Strange characters are drawn to its shores, laden with baggage of all sorts and in a hurry – as the self-proclaimed and, of course, fully informed attendant puts it – »to drown themselves«.
Katalin Vadász, a widow from Budapest, arrives with her suitcases. In her wake follows Kálmán, searching for »his Katalin« whom he has met through a personal ad. But they do not find each other and soon both have disappeared. Ervin the Painter, on the other hand, has fallen for Vera, the seductive and diabolical proprietress of the only house by the lake. But when the attendant looks for them, he finds only Vera?s portrait – Ervin has vanished without trace.
Gergely Péterfy is a wonderful teller of stories as precise as Péter Esterházy?s and as masterful as István Örkény?s »miniature novellas«. With a few deft strokes, he creates a colourful web of surreal stories and bizarre relationships, and casts a spell upon his readers.

Gergely Péterfy, born 1966, has published novels, radio plays and stories in Hungary. He is the recipient of several grants and awards, including the Atilla József Prize (2004).
